Australia Post and the Chief Minister for the Northern Territory the Hon Adam Giles MLA today officially opened a new superstore in Alice Springs, following a $1 million investment to cater for changing consumer needs, making it easier and more convenient for customers to access postal services in a modern environment.

Chief Minister for the Northern Territory the Hon Adam Giles MLA said: "Australia Post has listened to the needs of the Alice Springs community by investing in this Post Office transformation. The new superstore will provide access to critical services and create an important hub for residents and visitors alike, and I'm pleased to have had the opportunity to be involved in its official launch."

Australia Post Executive General Manager Postal Services, Christine Corbett, said the new superstore demonstrated Australia Post's commitment to the Alice Springs community, while also offering local residents and businesses an innovative range of parcel and postal products and services.

"Online shopping in Australia continues to grow so the introduction of a superstore in Alice Springs provides shoppers with access to postal services six days a week in a new, modern environment," Ms Corbett said.

"Our customers' needs have changed substantially over time and this superstore is another great example of how we're changing to meet those needs, investing in the community, and demonstrating our commitment to the Northern Territory.

"The new superstore features a state-of-the-art design and an extensive range of postal products and services, including 24/7 parcel lockers to make it even easier for customers to pick up parcels at a time that suits them."

Key features of the new superstore include:

  • A refreshed parcel collection area, featuring new PO Boxes and a new parcel collection counter, as well as 24/7 parcel lockers (including dedicated lockers for PO Box holders) that enable customers to collect their parcels at any time of the day or night
  • Self-service terminals for paying bills, purchasing products and sending letters or parcels
  • A dedicated online shopping zone including Apple Macs and iPads
  • Financial services including bill payment and banking
  • Identity services including tax file number applications and passport services
  • Travel services including foreign currency exchange and travel cards, travel insurance and travel merchandise.

Further demonstrating Australia Post's commitment to regional and rural communities, the business recently announced a $51.4 million boost in payments over the next four years to support its Licensed Post Office (LPO) and Community Postal Agency (CPA) network in regional and rural Australia. 25 postal outlets in the Lingiari electorate will directly benefit from these increased payments.

The Alice Springs superstore brings the total number of Australia Post superstores to 57 nationwide, and contributes to our commitment of 50 superstores in regional and rural areas by 2020.
